With the nice weather in the DC area this weekend I thought that I would drop the top, but as soon as I popped the latch and pressed the switch I saw the 'Soft Top Failure' message on the SID. After restarting the car I was able to get everything buttoned up.
Checking the archives I found a well-received post from Enzo back in 2002 describing the process for diagnosing this problem with a focus on low hydraulic fluid which appears to be the problem - the container is nearly empty. I saw that some people used Mobil 1 which does not sound like the best product and also saw that the Saab hydraulic fluid is something like $50 per quart.
Is there there an aftermarket alternative that I can buy at NAPA or AutoZone (maybe an Amsoil product) that is roughly equivalent and will cost a bit less? Also, what is the volume of the container? My hope is that a small investmet here will get my top back in working order.
