Where there's white smoke there's...what?

When starting up our '99 9-3 SE a couple of days ago after it had sat for about 2 hours, I noticed a large amount of white smoke emanating from the tailpipe. This lasted about 2-3 minutes and the smoke had no distinct smell. There was a mild rough idle that corrected itself quickly and I drove the car home (about 20 miles) without incident but keeping a very close eye on the dash panel.
The next morning I started the car without incident and was pulling out of the driveway when the warning chime sounded and the warning triangle flashed above the gauges. One chime and one flash, that was it. I proceeded out of the neighborhood when the same thing happened about a mile from home but the rest of the driving was fine.
Anyone have any ideas? At no time has there been a message on the SID. I seem to recall a rule of thumb about smoke: white means coolant, black means oil? The car is up for an oil change and strut mount replacement so I will have my Saab tech run an OBD check for possible codes.
When I mentioned the smoke to my wife (it's her DD) she said she had the smoke issue back in January and forgot to mention it to me. I haven't been able to check things myself as I've been sick with mild food poisoning. Three things came to mind as possibilities: heater core, head gasket, or catalytic converter gone bad. I have no concrete evidence for any of these, they were simply the first things that came to mind.
Thanks for your advice!
