Based on your description it was definitely steam, especially since it dissipated rather quickly once out of the tailpipe and had no odor. I got off my sickbed long enough to check the fluid levels. Oil was fine and was not the color of a chocolate milkshake so at least there's no coolant in the oil (yet). Coolant level in the overflow tank was down about 8 oz so I topped it off.
It's been normal to top this off to the tune of about a pint every 3 months as we have been trying to isolate the source of a burnt coolant smell inside the cabin for some time now. It occurs most frequently on long trips when the climate control has been operating for a few hours. I suspect the heater core or its O-rings but it has not been thoroughly investigated for financial reasons.
It seems, however, like I should prepare for a new headgasket, which won't be cheap. Could it be as simple as having the head bolts re-torqued?
