From the description you provided, it may just be the front main seal leaking. This is a relatively easy fix as long as you have the most of the right tools. There is a very large snap ring to remove that requires a gigantic pair of snap-ring pliers which I happened to have access to. Some folks have used the inner steel braided cable from a bicycle brake cable to loop thru the "ears" of the (internal type) snap ring to compress it enough for removal. I did this same job last summer on my daughter's '99 9-3SE and as I recall it went something like this:
1) safely raise the r.f. corner of the car and remove the wheel.
2) remove the plastic cover over the crank pulley
3) remove the serpentine belt (I think I removed the airbox first for better access, esp. when replacing the belt)
4) remove the crank pulley nut. The right way is to lock down the flywheel with a special tool that engages the flywheel ring gear thru the access cover. The other way (my way), was to use a pneumatic impact wrench.
5) remove the crank pulley. I needed to rig up a gear puller to get mine off. They're not really pressed on, but they are a good fit and they tend to get a bit stuck.
6) remove the large snap ring then pull of the oil pump cover by hand or gently with some channel-locks. It's made from aluminum so try not to beat it up.
7) There is a large o-ring on the outside and the crank seal on the inside. Replace both and reassemble.
8) the crank pulley should be torqued to spec., but that would require that special tool again, Air wrench to the rescue once again!
Her car was leaking oil like a sieve and hasn't leaked a drop since.
