when I did that job, the o ring was a bit too big (and it still leaked tranny fluid despite the new o ring once it was back together). So I took it apart, and put anaerobic sealant on the flat mating surfaces of the flange that holds the transaxle seal (actually, I put anaerobic sealant on the outer perimeter of the transaxle seal too for good measure). It's never leaked since! (But the car was totalled in December after I hit a moose!)
If the axle isn't going in, then either the axle it isn't lined up in the x/y axis with the tranny, or the spines don't match so that the peaks and valleys of each aren't meshing.
