Re: Try that pic again Posted by pete [Email] In Reply to: Try that pic again, crawdad |
This is the right side of the car as you are sitting in it.. right? and the companion shaft connects to the intermediate shaft that connects to the cv joint.
If this view is the outside looking in towards the engine, I'd say you have the wrong axle in there. The companion shaft (the one with the tripod bearing "cup") should be in that bracket in the picture (#17 on the link) so the tripod bearing "cup" (opening) on the companion shaft is staring at you as you look in towards the engine, so that the cup "covers" that bracket. "Put the rubber boot on the intermediate shaft first", (IRC, the rubber boot for the companion shaft cup and intermediate shaft only goes on one way) then put the tripod bearing on the end of the intermediate shaft (#11 lower axle in the pic) "by removing the circlip on the end of the shaft in the picture", smack the bearing with big hammer with a soft metal in between (copper or I used a piece of hard wood) on to the shaft, so that the tripod bearing is held in place by the circlip. I put the intermediate shaft in the vise vertically to install the tripod bearing. (Make sure the spines of the intermediate shaft and tripod bearing are lined up - peaks and valleys) and . Once the tripod bearing is on, install the circlip, fill the cup with grease, and install the intermediate shaft (#11).
You can call me if you need to at 403 540 7416 if this doesn't make sense.
