After hearing many say that the timing belt and tensioners should be replaced at 30K or 60K...I decided to have the work done at 45K.
Upon inspection:
Timing belt and tensioners still looked new. Little if any grease was coming out of the tensioners...still slightly stiff as the grease had not leaked out. Could have gone to 60K or more! But no way to inspect them unless timing cover was removed. So for safety am having them replaced.
Water Pump had been replaced with a HEPU pump before I got the car--date code 2002. Previous owner got car at 40K and I got the car in 2006 with 90K. Car now has 135K. Surprisingly despite the bad rap that I've heard about HEPU water pumps...this pump has about 100K on it...still a good bearing and no leakage--but am replacing it. Perhaps on the V6 HEPU pumps are OK...perhaps not on the 4 cylinder engines.
Am replacing the thermostat for good measure. It would go just above normal...then dip below normal before stabilising. It was replaced in 2002 or therabouts as well...approx. 100K on it.
Am providing this info to help others.
Yes...I know...not many V6 2.5L out there...but was surprised that these parts lasted as long as they did, considering what I've read from others...at least regarding the 4 cylinder models.
Car is at the shop....have had problems getting the timing belt and cams lined up. Even with locking tool...once tensioners are tightened "they move." Am a tooth off on CAM # 3, so shop is getting it right before it's started.
Downside of V6 is that you have to change these parts as maintenance items, yet each time, there's a risk of messing with what is working.
And so it goes....
