Shocks/struts and when to replace Posted by NCCaniac [Email] (#352) [Profile/Gallery] (more from NCCaniac) on Tue, 28 Jun 2011 12:06:13 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
My 2000 9-3 hatchback has abour 177,000 miles on the original OEM rear shocks and struts, but even though I do not notice a lot of "bouncing" when I push down and release on them when parked, I am noticing more bounce when driving over railroad tracks, etc. I'm assuming this is due to the shocks and strut inserts providing less damping than before and more work being done by the springs.
After doing a lot of searching on this board about the lifespan of the OEM shocks/struts and attributes of OEM vs. other brands, cost, etc., I am trying to decide what route to go. I plan to keep this car for 2 more years (perhaps longer?). Local dealer quote for OEM shocks and strut inserts plus installation is $1100+. Not sure if that is worth it considering other possible repairs coming over the next two years. I can do some things myself and keep the costs down, so I am wondering if I should just put new rear shocks on myself and go with that, or at this point and mileage, just bite the bullet and get both the fronts and back done. (In terms of wrenching I have installed a DrawTite hitch + wiring, replaced a repaired ABS control unit from BBA Remanufacturing, control shaft to heat/AC air distribution drum, etc.)
Suggestions?
