Alternator again. Not a repost. Please help. TY! Posted by Nicholas [Email] (#2995) [Profile/Gallery] (more from Nicholas) on Mon, 25 Jul 2011 10:13:01 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
OK, I've been burning the midnight oil here trying to find the best way to solve my stuck alternator bolt dilemna before I make things worse. Right now, old alternator still stuck on engine. Bottom alternator bolt head drilled off, which I should not have done. However, I can't change the past. Top alternator bolt is stuck with head intact but I believe it's stripped as I can't get any purchase on it. Also, I think both these bolts were way overtightened and partially stripped from the people that rebuilt my engine.
Anyway, I can't a plan together or much help so here is what I was thinking. PLEASE let me know what you think!
I was thinking I'd get a good drill bit just a bit smaller than the alternator bolt. Not sure on size? I would then drill out the entire bottom alternator bolt from the front (wheel well). On the top, I was thinking about getting a good bolt extractor, torch, pb (on the threads) and trying again. I really think it might work on the top, but I need help on the bottom. Do you think there would be any chance I could drill that thing out good enough to save the female threads on the bracket? I was even contemplating putting a self-tap bolt/screw in there if I muck up the threads as it sounds like replacing the bottom bracket is quite a disaster and tough job and I can't seem to find much info on it at all - on or offline.
As usual , TIA for any help. Nicholas 2000 9-3
