It is true that 10 years is a long life for a battery. There is no disputing that Seth. 10 years is indeed an admirable battery life. Yes indeed-y.
However it is also true that in an expensive vehicle marketed as the zenith of sophisticated Scandinavian technological achievement, in a "near-luxury segment" car that can ever-so-discreetly inform you of the many and myriad other conditions and system failures it is having, could have, has had, or is imminently about to have, by way of its dashboard SID panel, having an alarm system that can ONLY tell you that its (absurdly SOLDERED in) battery is soon going to die by also telling *everyone else* located within a 10 km radius of the car, preferably in short, loud, unpredictable bursts and preferably while people are trying to sleep, is an example of very, very, terribly bad, bovine design of the very worst order, as is in fact borderline criminal. It is absolutely, no excuses, horrendous and a nightmare of unconscionable stupidity.
It is a sad statement indeed when you can point to something like this and know instantly that even the dreaded Lord Lucas, the Prince of Darkness responsible for such electrical nightmare achievements as the circuitry in Jaguars, has been thoroughly outdone in all his spectacular achievements by a single, PLANNED design from Sweden years after Lord Lucas has set the benchmark for the nadir of automotive electrical design.
I wonder how many Saabs have suffered the effects of vandalism at the hands of people who, enraged that their neighbour's Saab (hell! their own Saab!) screamed randomly through several nights, effectively turning them into sleep-depribed zombies, took to said car with a sledgehammer, or perhaps more subtly, with gasoline and a match.
