motor mount or steering column knock?

1997 900s non turbo. I recently replaced all my shocks and the rare knock I heard and felt on the steering wheel got worse. The old left front shock was pretty soft - the right was almost ok. But the knock I'd hear and feel in the steering wheel which I'd get at the turnpike expansion joint got worse and more frequent - understandable given that I have a stiffer shock situation.
I read somewhere here that this knock may be related to tight clearances of the steering column striking the base of the dashpanel and to pad it up with stiff foam and 1 way ties. I tightened the 2 bolt hoke under the dash ( they were pretty solid anyway) but don't see anywhere it may be striking.
I also noticed that I can get this same knock quickly & repeatedly if I weakly play with the rate I let out the clutch from a stopped position. Its almost like a momentary hard dieseling shake.
So I was wondering that since in this case I haven't hit any "expansion" joint or similar bump, - is it maybe that my motor mount (which one) may be shot and that's why I get that strike even when there no joint or bump going from a stopped position.
How can I tell and is this kind of clutchy 'dieseling shake" what others experience.PS- the clutch was replaced 5k miles ago and i believe in good order.
thanks in advance for the comments
