Turbo woo, woo sound when cold. Posted by SWEDECAR [Email] (#112) [Profile/Gallery] (more from SWEDECAR) on Wed, 12 Oct 2011 09:28:50 In Reply to: Update - It's the turbo!, Sean, Mon, 10 Oct 2011 10:55:05 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
Well, I don't think it is that much to worry about unless you have other things that makes the turbo look bad like oil consumption or such.
I had an 01 9-3 in yesterday and when I started it, I heard that exact noise and realized that I kind of hear that on just about every car starting it cold, more or less.
It's just that the difference when listening to a sound file from a person asking what could be wrong to sitting in a car you know the history of doing the normal startup procedure, it mess with your head.
So I started the car and heard the sound like I most of the time do, and then it hit me, THAT'S the sound they talk about.
Well, my theory and the way I have always connected that sound is that it is just the idle up function at cold start making things more noisy since the throttle is opened more or that the AIC valve is more open.
It could very well be that the idle up function makes the turbo impeller spin faster during that heat up session and when the engine has warmed up slightly and gone into closed loop, the idle goes down and sound goes away.
