I have a 1995 SAAB 900SE V6.
Was driving about 70-75 MPH on the highway--smooth as silk and then...
I started having a bad shimmy--fighting to keep the wheel straight...I noticed the shimmy went nearly away when I took my foot off the gas...but sounded noisy...like a whirring noise. I pulled over and inspected the tires and rims...road was smooth...nothing was hit--nothing.
Started to drive slowly around 30 MPH and the shimmy was worse...even with foot off the gas--in all lanes...so I doubt it was the road.
Drove slowly for a few miles and noticed that the shimmy was gone...but now a slight road noise.
Front tires are fairly new...heard some good and bad about the Yokahama Avids....
Not sure where to look...car acts as if nothing happened, but if it did it once.....
Wheel weights? bearings? Steering?
Rims and tires looks fine though ps pump is on it s way out...lots of whine...am going to replace it monday...but.......
Could the tires have temporarily deformed at high speed? I know its weird but all pressures etc seem normal.
All I can say is I could see the steering wheel move and it took effort to hold it straight.
Strut mounts are worn.
Both lower control arms were replaced.
Why and how etc. would it come and go? Was frightening.
