If you do get a trap

Get one of the slightly more expensive ones with plastic jaws and sensitive touch pads. The local mice population where I live must have evolved the dexterity to steal/lick peanut butter clean off the traditional Victory wood and copper wire traps without ever setting one off.
Also use a baby monitor if you have one, so when you hear the trap going off, run to it with a steak knife and a pair of surgical gloves. If it's a chipmunk, which is usually too big to be killed by mouse traps and tend to use their paws instead head to get the lure, open the trap and let it go. If it's a mouse, cut its head off quickly in case the trap didn't finish the job. Never touch either animal with bare hands. Some mice may have bot fly larva in them this time of the year. If a giant worm (up to a quarter of the mouse' size) wiggles out of the dead mouse' anus, slice that in half too. Bot flies are really dangerous to humans and other mammals alike. If you get one of those, you will have put a disease mouse out of its misery (hmm, think of a parasite inside you one quarter of your own size trying to eat its way out; just like the movie "Aliens" except for it's real!)
If after all that graphic detail, you still want to use a trap, chain it down so a hapless chipmunk doesn't run off with a trap attached to one of its leg. Best of luck with getting rid of or warding off rodents. They are very territorial animals, so relocating them may well result in them getting killed by their own kind or starving to death anyway. It's a messy business. Killing one would only open up the territory to new comers as they multiply fast. Best just find something like pepper to ward them off. I kill them only when they are inside my house.
