I have all sorts of questions about why they removed the master cylinder if they were just flushing/bleeding the brakes. However, that's pretty moot at this point. I'm not sure they broke it, but only because I don't know how to break it like that. Were they trying to take it apart? Based on the rust, maybe any attempt to take it apart would result in it breaking. At any rate, bite the bullet and replace it. Its not the mechanics fault it was rusty.
