My '01 had an occasional P/S groan on cold days, but particularly there was a high-pitched whine when turning a tight corner. I decided to try changing the fluid first, so I mail-ordered a quart of CHF-11S ($20) and then got nervous and bought a second quart locally from a BMW dealer ($23).
I used a hand-powered siphon pump to suck the old fluid from the reservoir, then refilled it and ran the car to purge the system. After a few minutes of working the steering back and forth, the bubbles dissipated and I topped off the fluid level. In all, I didn't even use one full quart, and that was about 3 years/40K miles ago with no steering noises or leaks since. The car has 155K total miles, by the way.
I should mention that the old fluid was brown and of unknown origin, while the Pentosin is greenish. You'd definitely need more than one quart to completely flush the system, but I wasn't worried about a small amount of contamination, and like I said, no issues since. Hope this helps.
