Suspension questions 2000 9-3 Posted by Nicholas [Email] |
Over the past few years, my car has developed a few tire wear and ride problems. Basically, I have uneven wear on the tires (cupping), and a rough ride mainly due to the tire wear. This is mostly on the rear.
The car has had 17 inch BBS wheels on it for years, which were (I think) originally pulled from a 9-5. Ever since that change, there has always been a "clearance problem" on the rear where the tire will bump the well with any sort of weight in the back seat. I believe the original wheel size was 15 inch. However, I didn't have many other problems until I changed the original Michelin pilot tires several years ago. I did change to another equally low profile tire.
In addition to the rear alignment being now off, I've been told that the cupping wear could actually be due to a worn out or damaged strut.
I haven't fixed the rear alignment problem , nor have I done any other work to correct this problem. The tires are still on the car with the uneven wear, but at this point I'd like to correct the problem, and if possible even fix the clearance/alignment issue with the rear. My guess is the larger rims gradually threw off the rear alignment over many years of driving.
Does the strut/spring replacement on front or rear sound like it's going to be necessary? If so, I'm wondering the best way to do that and parts to get. I plan on DIY'ing if possible on any strut or spring replacement as I have on other cars.
Thanks.
