This sounds very similar to the problems I had with 45 series 17" tires on my 2001 9-5. It had cupping that I didn't notice and was sure it was a wheel bearing issue. I had to put on new shocks and add a spring spacer to correct the geometry. The suspensions are different but I could easily imagine something similar occurring on the 9-3 with worn shocks and alignment problems.
I also had a '97 900SE with 16" wheels but never had tire wear problems. It originally had 50 series tires but I changed to 55 series because the ride was a little too harsh.
