I've got a '97 900, and friend had a '98 900, we both had springs break... for both of us, it sounded like the same issue, where less than one ful revolution of the coil broke off... in mine, it was more than 1/2 of a revolution, so I couldn't pull it off of the shock.
It continued to clink-clink around in there for almost a year before I could get to it.
I bought the entire front suspension off of a car being parted out, (similar age/mileage) and just swapped the one on each car. 2 years, 15k miles, going good here... but I realize since I bought another one with 100k+ miles I could be setting myself up for another replacement down the road. I had also needed a knuckle (broke a wheel bolt cross-threading putting on winter tires during a snow-storm a few years back, so couldn't beat the price of used :)
