So. Compression is back. 1,2 are really good (150 PSI) 3,4 are less (110PSI). Could be headgasket...but that's unrelated.
Fuel pump IS bad. Jumped from fuse box. New pump plugged in (outside of tank), starts. Old pump in tank is silent, and I don't get a spark at the jumper wire as if there's an open circuit.
It's very possible the mechanic diagnosed bad compression. It did sound weird at the end of my cranking/diagnosing. Not sure why though.
Now I'll replace the pump and see if it starts. Valve cover gasket came in today, but it'll probably take me a few days. Busy weekend.
