It's all about your driving profile. My daily commute is 37 miles total (both ways), so I won't need the gasoline engine very often. The car is ideal for my driving profile.
If you have longer distances to go, the VW/Audi TDI models are the way to go. I would have considered a Golf or Jetta Wagon TDI, if it was available with automatic climate control and less hard plastic in the interior. The Audi is nice on the inside, but the exterior design doesn't excite me any more than that of my 9-3.
If you are interested in a Volt - today is the last day of the current incentives. I don't know, if they'll renew those, but it brought the lease cost down significantly. If I deduct my estimated fuel savings from my monthly lease, the Volt will cost me about $150/month or less.
I would not normally lease a car, but in case of the Volt, leasing makes a lot more sense than buying (and taking depreciation risk). The battery is warranted for 8 years and 150k miles, I believe, so I'm not worried about it.
