Homemade support bracket for Gear selector cable?

Hi.

I'm in the process of nearly completing a rebuild of a '96 NG900 2.0T. The NPS went bad (of course), and somehow during the process of removing it, a little plastic support structure within the gear selector cable snapped.

Practical upshot? It won't shift from R to P, causing a bow in the cable. I have it disconnected currently, and am considering the means of strengthening it. Has anyone done so?

This is the best picture of the cable that I can find, roughly marking where the plastic support is 'broken'. I'm considering making something to support this cable from both the mounting bracket, and, if humanly possible, fitting another side to the right bolt of the NPS.

Tearing apart the whole car to replace this cable is above my abilities, and I can't really add further expense as this is an 'at cost' rebuild for a friend on TSN.
