Yes, NPS for Automatic, NSS for manual. Otherwise known as 'Gear Position Switch' to most of the world.
Does it stay in 'limp' mode? If you let it stay in limp, and then shut down, does it return? Immediately, or not?
If it is NPS/NSS, you may find it randomly cutting out on you while driving, and have to monkey with the transmission a few times to get it working again - IF this is the issue. Since you are getting into 'limp' mode, I assume that it is.
Getting good used NPS/NSS is difficult, if not somewhat improbable. It took me 3 tries to get a GOOD used NPS, but it was also a third of the price ($100 roughly vs $300+). It's pretty easy to remove - right under the battery.
I've heard, but not personally experienced similar issues when the ignition switch was shot, but throwing into limp mode is a good idea to check the NPS.
