2001 convertible top manual operation

I am thinking of picking up a 2001 vert that appears to be in decent shape. The only major issue is that the top will stop on the way up and the button needs to be depressed a second time to complete the cycle. I do nearly all my own work and don't have a tech2. When I had my 1996 ng900 convertible, I was able to operate the convertible manually (even though many posters said it couldn't be done). I figure the top on this one is going to break soon and don't think it would make sense to invest $s and times to fix it, since I park in a garage and only drive it when it is nice outside. Has anyone here figured out a way to manually operate the newer (hydraulic) convertible tops?
