I've never had this exact problem myself, but it sounds like what I've read here concerning the EVAP purge valve found on T-7 cars. On an '02 it should be located in the passenger's side of the engine bay, just behind the air filter housing. It's got an electrical connector and two hoses clamped on at 90 degrees to each other.
This valve's purpose is to allow vapors from the gas tank to be sucked into the intake and burned to prevent them from escaping to the atmosphere. My understanding is that it's closed initially at startup, but as the engine warms up it begins to cycle open and closed rapidly. If the valve (or the hose connected to it) has a leak, it'll act just like a vacuum leak and cause stumbling or stalling. I once tested this by disconnecting the intake-side hose from the valve, which resulted in a hissing sound and stumbling engine.
You can do similar testing on your friend's car to replicate the symptoms, and in fact you could plug the hose with a bolt or something (a bolt's threads might not be leak-proof) to see if the stalling goes away. If that does it, the valve may have a leak or may be sticking open - you can spray WD-40 in to clean it, and I think a 9V battery is enough to test whether you can hear the solenoid click open and closed.
Just make sure that if it does come down to replacing the valve, you get the appropriate one for a T-7 car (the 9-5 has the same part). The earlier T-5 cars also have an EVAP system, but it's totally different.
