I got the car back and after the linkage update and short shifter mod, I still can't get reverse with the car running. I have to shut it off. When I try to put it into reverse while running there is a loud 'clunk' like it's close but it won't go further. The clunk happens only once until I turn the car off, restart and try again. The mechanic said he thinks it's a worn syncro, saying that if it were a bent fork it would be grinding or not going into reverse at all. The shifting feels as stiff and notchy as it did before the updated linkage and short shifter. [The mechanic said before they updated the linkage and the shifter that it had to do with a bushing on the shifter(?)]
I know it's the same transmission, but I am really wondering if they didn't flush the tranny before they put the royal purple in. (And if that would result in both clunky, poppy shifting, and a lack of reverse.) It's a 96 and it had regular 10w-40 motor oil (non-synthetic) prior to the clutch job.
I also noticed today (it was never noticeable before) a very loud high pitched whine while driving. It only occurred while the car was moving (the wheels turning). It went away when stopped. I assume it has to do with the transmission, but I'm not sure. If it continues I'll post a new thread about it.
Thank you all! I appreciate the time you took to respond.
