My '00 base 9-3 and '01 Viggen have both had MAFs replaced under warranty. The dealer's technician stated he tested the '00 MAF per SAAB guidelines and it passed. After the engine failed, he stated SAAB gave him "updated" testing procedures at which point the MAF was determined to be bad.
I have replaced the MAF TWICE on my Viggen after the warranty expired. So basically I personally have seen 4 OEM direct-from-SAAB MAFs go bad. I kept the last 2 from my Viggen. The first one is CLEARLY toast as the engine bucks badly with it (this is the one installed under warranty!). The 2nd one is questionable as I could detect pinging every so slightly under very specific conditions. (New, OEM, purchased from a site sponsor.)
LONG STORY SHORT, over 1 year ago I bought a less than $100 remanufactured MAF from a very popular online parts catalog (not a site sponsor). Have had no issues with it yet. The POINT is, they go bad quite often, they seem to last about 2 years, so why pay extra for an OEM part that could fail just as easily???
You'll always have to be in tune with your engine and back off immediately if you detect pinging or unusual boost, etc. etc.. That is the only thing that has saved my bacon on the Viggen.
