Sounds like it may need the transmission range switch replaced.
Faulty PRNDL switch will often be accompanied by an intermittent crank-no-start symptom.
Limp-home mode may be a separate issue...? or it may just be that the transmission control module thinks that a lower gear is being commanded/selected.
Have it scanned. what are the fault codes?
