Power Steering Rack, strut mount or other? Posted by Eric S [Email] |
Last summer (July 2012) I redid my entire suspension (2002 9-3 SE, original owner). New Bilsteins, Eibach springs, polyurethane all around the front end, and new strut mounts / bearings. This complemented the aluminum steering rack brace I already had.
One peculiar item I noticed back then was that when I removed the bolts that hold the tie rods to the rack, two drips of PS fluid came out of the bolt holes. I wasn't sure if that's normal or not, but proceeded with the job and it came out great.
A couple of weeks later, I noticed that the hard power steering line under the bumper rusted through and I had to replace it. The pump seemed ok, but since I was changing the line, I replaced the pump too. I never bled the system, but did replace about a full quart of new $$$ PS fluid.
Now, about 11 months / 2,000 miles later, I hear a noise when I turn which sounds like the "farty" noise when you squeeze the last bit of shampoo out of the bottle. I suspect this is either insufficient fluid inside the rack or a broken strut bearing (despite the bearing being essentially brand new). If it was the bearing, I suspect steering would not be smooth, though it is smooth, so maybe that's not the problem (?). If it's the rack, does that noise - or the drip I saw when I removed the tie rod bolt - mean I need to replace the whole rack, or is this just a low-fluid issue? The level in the reservoir seems fine and I've seen no leak on the ground. Maybe fluid is leaking internally within the rack (?).
Any insight is enormously appreciated.
Thanks,
Eric
