Your Indy is not entirely correct, in that the clutch bearing can indeed be replaced without pulling the compressor. I know because I've done it.
That said, in my case, replacing the bearing didn't fix the problem (fuse blew every time the AC was turned on). I verified it wasn't a bad relay and couldn't find any damaged wires. From talking to people and searching online, the most likely problem is that something in the compressor was damaged when the belt snapped.
So unless you're willing to replace the bearing yourself, it really isn't worth paying someone to do it, as you may end up having to replace the compressor anyway. I did pay someone to press the old bearing out and press in the new one, but my total cost was only $100.
