but that's not to say it doesn't happen. It's the same one in a 9-5 too though, and if you haven't heard about it from 9-5 owners, I doubt it's that common.
It shouldn't lead to a clutch failure unless the bearing locks up, and then I imagine you would have a lot of noise and a lot of wear/heat/debris as the clutch fingers spun against the throwout bearing.
I wouldn't worry about any of the above happening, personally.
Yes the tranny needs to come out.
