Unfortunately there is no easy answer I can give you on a problem like this, especially after so many parts has been replaced.

Obviously, the shop doesn't know either what the problem is since they replace parts instead of fault tracing the problem.

All depending on how it starts up and how it cough and die and if it is possible to keep it alive by giving it some gas pedal and what the fuel pressure is doing at the same time together with the fuel injector pulses, you would have to find a shop that have the interest in spending time fault tracing the problem by measuring fuel pressure, compression, camshaft timing (if any headgasket job has been done), intake vacuum, fuel injector power and ground signals and other basic tests that you do when you have a problem car like this.

There is no software update capabilities on a 97 900 so you probably misread that post since it was most likely about a 9-3 or 9-5 and not a 900.
