ABS out and speedometer

My 2002 Saab 9-3 (with 156,000 miles) was just diagnosed with a failed ABS sensor. The mechanic said he can send mine out to be reconditioned for about $1,000. He said the Saab parts suppliers don't supply just the ABS sensor unit; you can only buy it with some kind of hydraulics and other stuff that I don't need (for about $3,000), so he feels repairing my unit is the better way to go.
He also said that while the unit is out of my Saab, the speedometer won't work.
Has anybody had experience with this, and if so, would you suggest getting my ABS sensor unit "reconditioned?" Thanks in advance.
