Compressor failure is common. Unfortunately, replacing just the clutch/pulley will cost more than replacing the whole compressor (WITH the clutch/pulley). Not too bad a job. Most mechanics do it from the bottom. I did it from the top and replaced the water pump and accessory belt (and idlers and tensioner) while I was at it.
If you've never replaced a compressor before, you need to pay attention to how much oil is in it. The system is supposed to have a specific amount of oil in it. Too much or too little and it won't work very well. When you get a new compressor, drain the oil out (it just pours out when you remove the plastic plugs), measure the volume, and pour it back in. After you have everything put back together (including a new dryer), take it to a shop to have the system charged and tell them how much oil is in it. They will probably have to add a bit more.
