Get as much history as you can and check for sludge Posted by NCCaniac [Email] (#352) [Profile/Gallery] (more from NCCaniac) on Tue, 1 Apr 2014 08:07:18 In Reply to: Looking at a 2000 9-3, JohnD, Mon, 31 Mar 2014 15:57:41 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
If you are seriously considering the car, it can be good if it was well maintained. You want to be sure it had the PCV #6 change made (there was a technical service bulletin about this for the sludge issue) and if not, make sure that is done if everything else checks out. (You can get the parts for that change from eeuroparts.com or any other place that sells OEM Saab parts. genuinesaab.com has a copy of the TSB instructions.)
If you can find out any history of the car and whether it had synthetic oil changes at regular intervals that lessens the chance of sludge. (Don't take the dealer's word for it....try and get documentation.)
Either way, I would make sure you can have an independent Saab mechanic drop the oil pan to check for signs of sludge. If the dealer gives you a 3-5 return policy, if the car checks out and drives OK, you could have the mechanic drop the pan and check during that 3-5 day period and if sludge is found, return the car to the dealer for a refund.
With a little bit of rust, the teat in the seat, brake needs....I think you should be able to get it for $2000 or less. At this point it is not worth more, even with low miles.
