Rand om Engine Failure on 2000 9-3 SE Posted by Thomas333639 [Email] (#1880) [Profile/Gallery] (more from Thomas333639) on Sun, 13 Apr 2014 19:05:15 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
Symptoms and attempted fixes so far:
1. While running at speed or idling, the engine randomly would die (but not go into Limp Home Mode). I could get it to restart merely by turning the key off, turning it on and clutch starting the engine while i was still rolling.
2. The choke in the throttle body failed, and i replaced the throttle body.
3. Now, when the engine died, either on the highway or while waiting at idle (if i fluctuated the throttle, it would not stall), it would go into Limp Home mode (the throttle body now worked) but i could not reset the system by turning the key on and off, but needed to pull over and disconnect and reconnect either the positive or negative terminal on the battery. Once that was done, the car was apparently reset and restart fine (consistent with #1, above), and run well. Further on this issue, i purchased an Error Code reader and if the engine failed i could plug in the Error Code reader and press the Erase Codes key, and the engine would restart fine. Therefore, it was the sent code that was preventing the engine from running or restarting.
The Error Code that comes up is P1230. I do not know what this is.
4. I replaced the Ignition Cassette with no effect; random engine failures continued.
5. I replaced the ignition switch which, while solving an ignition starting problem i was having, did not affect the random engine failure. Coincidentally, after i installed the new ignition switch the car ran for over 500 miles before the random engine failures started up (pun intended) again. When the engine failures start, they usually come in groups, as in the engine will fail 3 or 4 times for the next 30 miles, then go a long way before doing it again.
Any experience with this anyone. This issue has been plaguing me for some time now.
