Hi,
I have 2001 9-3se with close to 130k miles. When I left town for 1 day this past weekend, the next morning the engine would not start. The engine cranked strong (new battery), my tank was full of fuel (filled up and drove 50 miles the previous evening). I have a month old SAAB OEM ignition cassette, new spark plugs. I checked 2-3 year old fuel pump, it was humming when expected (in both ON and START positions). No CEL.
After several attempts got me nowhere, I decided to call the towing service. Since I was in an area with no cell phone reception, making arrangements took awhile. While doing this, two or three times I made attempts to start the car - they all failed. After I finally placed the order for towing, I decided to crank yet again and the engine started. I cancelled the tow and drove back home. With the car in my driveway, I started the engine several times - no issues. I will try again in the morning, when it is cold.
At this point I am looking for ideas/recommendations on how to determine the problem and what components might have malfunctioned. Any advice will be greatly appreciated.
Thank you, -Alex
P.S. One variable that may be worth paying attention to is that in the morning during the 1st "cranking session" the engine did not fire at all. A little later, when the temperature rose a bit, during the 2nd "session" there was a trace of combustion action. And then at 1 pm, when it got warmer, the engine started. All of this in California in the San Francisco Bay Area where we have had some relatively warm days recently. Normally the car starts right up, no extended cranking is needed.
P.S.S. While getting to my out-of-town destination, at one point I noticed that the fuel gauge "reserve" light came on momentarily and the needle of the fuel gauge dropped down as if I had no fuel, which was not true (I had full tank). The problem self corrected within few seconds and it had no effect on the engine performance. If it weren't for the fact that it was almost dark outside, I would have never noticed the light. But thought to myself that some electrical connection must have malfunctioned.
