Yes, I had three vacuum/pressure leaks this summer Posted by MI-Roger [Email] (#882) [Profile/Gallery] (more from MI-Roger) on Thu, 25 Dec 2014 14:46:58 In Reply to: More vacuum leak tracing therapy, Noel, Thu, 25 Dec 2014 10:10:51 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
Both caused significant drive-ability issues and both were easy to correct once the offending part was discovered. The first was major erosion or compaction of the O-ring where the Turbo By-pass Valve discharge connects to the turbo inlet pipe. No power, whistling sound at higher engine speeds, very poor fuel mileage.
The third was a failed O-ring on the throttle body inlet. The pressure pipe popped loose and the engine would not run above idle speed. I could barely get the car out of the expressway drive lanes to diagnose and repair it on the shoulder.
The second was harder to diagnose. I had tried everything else, or so I thought, and finally decided the Boost Control Valve must have failed. While pulling gently on the C hose to replace the control valve, the entire hose pulled out of the engine bay! The C hose had been nearly severed by the small sharp metal hose clamp which secured the hose to the barbed fitting at the entrance to the turbo compressor section. The deep long slit caused by the clamp resulted in a major vacuum leak, and my gentle tugging on this lose completely tore it free with only a half-inch of hose still attached by the clamp to the compressor inlet fitting.
