Blinking engine light, fuel issue?

2001 with 103k miles. Driving only 20 miles after low fuel light coming on the car began to struggle to respond to acceleration at 60 mph and later 30 mph. And engine light began blinking .. Once home, car struggled to start until I added about a gallon and a half of gas. Now it runs fine (at least for the 10 miles I have driven since) and the engine light hasn't come back on, yet. I have, in the past, driven well over 30 miles with low fuel light on and had no problems. Clearly best to keep more fuel in tank but wondering if anybody has experienced this.
My backyard Saab mechanic/ Saab graveyard owner brother suggests it could be fuel pump, pre pump, DI cassette, or crank position sensor. Possible, too, that air got into fuel lines or sensor for fuel light is inaccurate? Coincidently I had just driven in pouring rain and hit a few puddles, causing for initial questions about whether or not moisture could have caused hesitation and rough idle on restart.
Is it normal for blinking engine light to come on if very low on fuel?
Thanks in advance for any input.
