Windshield wipers not working right

So I went on vacation for a week, came back and my battery was dead. No problem, got a jump, car starts now. But since then, my windshield wipers are funky. I have to hold the wiper stalk in order to get them to move and keep moving. this is the mist function. so if i let go of the stalk, they immediately stop wiping. and my spray jets don't work now at all. and the rear wiper does about 1/3 of a wipe before it stops as well.
what's going on?? I removed the stalk and took it apart. didn't find anything wrong/broken, but I removed/cleaned the wiper tracks and put more dielectric grease there and reassembled to the same effect.
Any ideas? I need to take a look at the schematics, but I don't have immediate access to them. Is that schematic available anywhere so I can try to narrow down the problem?
Thanks Saabnet!
