Had the turbo go out on my 2000 9-3 base about 200 miles from home (175,000 miles on the car). Managed to pull into a small indy repair shop with a good mechanic (but of course not trained in things Saab). I had them put on a rebuilt turbo (Rotomaster from Rock Auto) and I got the car home with no problem--everything seems good in terms of performance of the car.
While fixing the car, the repair shop called to say that two of the studs on the exhaust manifold were loose (probably rusted out according to them). My Haynes manual does not talk about taking off the exhaust manifold in order to change the turbo, but I have never done it so maybe they found it easier to replace the turbo by taking the exhaust manifold off. In any event, they did and in addition to the two rusted out studs they apparently broke off one other stud.
Rather than wait another week for them to get parts in, I told them to put it back together without the studs (if they thought it would get me back home), figuring that I could deal with the studs back home. As I said, the car ran great on the way back and does not appear to leak at the exhaust manifold/engine interface.
Question: Should I be worried about those studs and get to work on replacing them right away or do you think I can let it go until/unless a problem arises with a leak in the exhaust manifold gasket? I have seen discussions of how to get out the studs with the manifold still attached, but sometimes things are better off left alone. But I would appreciate any opinions.
Best,
Pete
