Rear inboard pads can get stuck in the caliper body. The capliper pistons are ok. The outboard pads wears out, the inboard pad just sits there.
The floating caliper on the front can get stuck if its guide bolts are rusted. Was the pad wear on the front uneven?
In both cases, librication is the preventative. Pad edge contact points to caliper bodies should have brake component grease, and caliper to caliper carrier sliding points and guide bolts need lubrication. Saab does not recommend this, but it is common practice.
Then there are folks, mostly in automatics, who drive with one foot on the gas, and one on the brakes.
The 4 cylinder engine should be quite quiet, very smooth.
