Hello,
Yes that would be the number 1 piston. They number them starting at the drivebelt with number 4 be closest to the flywheel. Yes a compression test would be a good start to finding if one combustion chamber is damaged. A leak down test can be used to get a better idea of were compression is being lost.
Did you start the car and remove the dipstick to see if exhaust was coming out of there? A piston being cracked or having a hole burned in it would allow the combustion gasses to enter the crankcase.
If the compression test is good it could still be an engine knock from either a bearing or a wrist pin. Another fairly easy thing to do is to remove the drive belt and run the car without any of the accesories turning. I have heard some rather strange noises from ac compressors or from a bracket being loose that mounts the alternator or even from a crank pully that is starting to seperate. Good Luck, Bernie
