I think you should be able to feel the engine revving faster than the transmission/forward momentum, at which point relaxing the throttle just a bit will result in the RPMs dropping a tad as the clutch hooks up again.
I'd say the sure fire way to test the clutch health is to get on a fast freeway and probably go with wide open throttle in 3rd or 4th gear. As the car is accelerating, push the clutch pedal in a little until the engine revs up, then QUICKLY release the pedal. It should lock back down no problem. Again, do this very quickly and don't let it slip long at all. If it won't lock up instantly, then let up on the gas or you may be walking home.
For that matter, do this close to home or the shop that will be doing the work!
At 140k, I'd have to think the clutch is a goner. When I pulled mine at maybe just over 100k, it was about at the rivets. Up to that point I was pretty gentle with the clutch. (As opposed to now with the puck-style disc which I can't wait to burn up and replace. Which I doubt will happen, it seems to love being abused.)
