I bought a very nice looking, but cheap 01 93 SE that didn't start because it didn't have a key, and the dealer said that he thought that the prior owner had blown the headgasket.
Since I had a spare key/twice set, I didn't think it was a bad risk and I bought it. When I ran a compression test on it, the readings were 110, 133, 160, 155 (from 1 to 4) and there was no oil in the coolant or coolant in the oil. The motor is not sludged.
So I pulled the head off today, and I really can't interpret what I saw, but it appears that the gasket was separated more around the 1 and 2 cylinders, but I can't see any obvious breaks in it either. The valves appear to be okay as well, but again, I don't have a reference.
My big concern now is the block, and if there are problems in the pistons, rings, bearings etc. Since I never got the car running I didn't get to hear anything. It sounds normal tuning over however. My question is, is there a way to check the health of the lower end while I have this all apart before I go to the work and expense of replacing the headgasket? I'd hate to do all that work only to find out it had a low end knock or bad rings...
