Blower been out or intermittent for 2 years, can't take the lack of heat/AC anymore, so took the job on myself-and got it done! Plus, I could NOT find instructions here, on Youtube, or anywhere else, which was a bummer but I decided to go ahead anyway.
Findings: the old resistor was completely rotted out, corroded, one connector a bit burned. Got the new part online for about $30 (yes, made in China), vs about $150 or more from the dealer.
Tools needed: Socket set (remove wiper arms and wiper linkage, leave motor and its connector alone).
Torx T-20 screwdriver (for the bolt holding the resistor)
Vacuum (for the leaves under there, plus to clean the cabin air filter)
Large screwdriver (helps to get the wiper arms off)
tiny screwdrivers (to get out the corrosion in the connectors)
Dremel with wire brush attachments, and maybe with cutting wheel attachment if the old resistor housing won't come off.
heavy wire cutter (to destroy the old resistor housing if corrosion won't allow normal removal from the connector).
Flashlight or headlight.
Armor-all or similar-for the gaskets, and glue in case the outer cowl gasket comes loose.
Procedure: Lift hood, remove wiper arms, remove outer cowl, disconnect tubing for windshield washer, remove inner cowl and firewall gasket. Remove wiper linkage (3 bolts, they don't have to come all the way out). Rotate linkage away and cover with rag.
Remove cabin air filter, set aside and clean with vacuum. Vacuum all loose leaves as you expose them, or they will end up going through your blower motor! Don't have to remove bolts holding the housing for the cabin filter.
Locate the resistor in front left (driver's side) aspect of housing for the cabin filter.
DISCONNECT battery!
Remove resistor with TORX screwdriver, remove wires and electrical connector (this can be really difficult if corroded as mine was). Clean up all contacts with tiny screwdrivers and Dremel as much as possible.
IS DIELECTRIC GREASE ADVISABLE? I DIDN'T USE ANY, BUT WONDERING?
Install new resistor carefully, don't bend anything, screw back in, reattach connectors. Reconnect battery and test blower-EUREKA!
Reinstall the rest in reverse order, treat the gaskets with armor-all first and reglue if necessary. Reconnect tubing for windshield washer.
Hate to tell you how long this took, but part of the time was because I struggled with things that most won't have to, plus I'm not too experienced under the hood.
Anyway, I hope this helps other Saab owners out!
