I recently had this same experience with my son's '02 9-3 SE. Eeuroparts sells a "front suspension kit" for a bit over $400 which includes both control arms, both stanchion arms, sway bar bushings and end links, tie rod ends, and all new fasteners - everything you need brand new. He had a quote from a well respected long-time Indy Saab shop for labor only to install the parts we'd already bought on one side only - $575. Not to throw anybody under the bus, but that's crazy! I talked to several techs and it was likely less than an hour of work. I could have lived with $200, people gotta eat and pay the light bill, but people who work on these cars are going to have to choose between "some business" and "no business" - no one is going to pay this type of rate for these cars - they'll just be scrapped. Basically in this thread, the shop mentioned is proposing to charge $1100 for 3 hours of work. Anyhow, we did it ourselves in a day with the only problem being that I tore one of the outer CV joint boots and then had to also replace the drive axle ($61 from Autozone)so do be careful of that, but the only special tool you need is a ball joint separator (I bought a "pickle fork" from NAPA years ago). Got a front-end alignment next day ($79) which you have to do after replacing the tie rod ends (note that those have a left-handed thread on one side; right and left are different!). So basically we have an entire new front suspension for $500 and a day's work - feels great (both the car and the wallet)!
