It is the wheel offset. 8" wheel with a 42mm works great with even 235s But if you run the more common 35mm offset wheels then it is a problem. They sit too far outboard and rub the corners of the bumper in the back. A hard part to clearance too since its a support.
A lowered car is just artificially in bump compression. Clearance over the range of travel is the same. Those 35mm would work great on a 9-5 or new 9-3.
I run 235/35 18 or 225/40-18 on my 42mm offset 8" bbs on very low coilovers. On my 17s 225/45 or 235/40
It only rubs on the underside if you use too much turbo on speedbumps, or is that not enough turbo..
