Neil,
I'm with Justin on this one. An e46 BMW (made at the exact same time period as the Viggen) is a far superior driver's car. It is apples to oranges, yet the cars were sold in the same era, with similar target audiences.
I love my (5dr) Viggen, but if I wanted a car that handled really well, an open-topped Viggen would be about the last thing I'd want to start with.
When you start talking about new BMW models (and all of their softness and cost of ownership, etc.), I feel like the argument changed.
I'm prepared to keep my Viggen in top-notch condition, and enjoy it every time I turn the key. It is largely stock (only steering rack braces) and I plan to keep it that way. They are lovely cars. At the moment, I chose to own a Viggen over an e46, though an e46 or e9X will certainly one day be in the family.
The Viggen is a wonderful, unique, flawed and awesome car. (All the greats have flaws... that's character.)
Cheers,
~Peter
