the low side of a a/c manifold gauge usually reads to a bit more than 120 psi, it's possible you have that much static pressure in the system if it's a really hot day (like over 100 deg). But you aren't going to damage the gauges with any of the sort of pressures you have in a normal A/C system, it will just read off scale (the high side gauge usually reads to 500 psi). Having both the low & high sides connected and seeing what happens when the compressor turns on would be useful. That you could run the system cold for 10 min with the old coil and that it would then disengage suggests there is something triggering a fault condition and shutting the system down. Do you have access to a Tech2? That would tell you whether the DICE error codes for either the antifreeze or pressure sensors were set.
